President Obama Pauses Campaign To Focus On Hurricane Sandy

If you live on the East Coast, Hurricane Sandy was more than a trending topic on Twitter to you. It represented devastation in the black of night–free-flowing floods, uprooted trees and howling winds. In the the midst of his attempt at being re-elected, President Obama took to the White House podium yesterday to address his American people, saying:

“The great thing about America is when we go through tough times like this, we all pull together. We look out for our friends. We look out for our neighbors. And we set aside whatever issues we may have otherwise to make sure that we respond appropriately and with swiftness. I am not worried at this point about the impact on the election. I’m worried about the impact on families, and I’m worried about our first responders … The election will take care of itself next week. Right now, our No. 1 priority is to make sure that we are saving lives.”

While I hunkered down in my Brooklyn apartment, I wondered how Hurricane Sandy would effect his campaign, early voting and the election in general. President Obama took a break from his last few days in campaigning and canceled an Orlando appearance to fly back into the nearly evacuated Washington, D.C.

It’s being reported on The Daily Beast that President Obama was indeed campaigning during the devastation, proving that, “he had taken charge of the federal response and displaying compassion toward the victims of Hurricane Sandy.” You know, basically doing his job as Commander In Chief. This week is a crucial one in the election, as both candidates need to campaign to the Eastern swing states.

Mitt Romney also canceled appearances because, let’s face it, he’d look like the devil himself, asking for votes when families in the East Coast are without power and a place to call home, because of Sandy. Although, Romney’s already put his foot in his mouth when it comes to natural disasters and his role in aiding victims. Check out Romney’s feelings on FEMA below. This is a man that says, “Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that’s the right direction.”

Even when it comes to responding to natural disasters, President Obama’s still got the American people’s best interest at heart and Romney has…well, his. Who will get your vote on November 6th?
